Mango Lassi

We just returned from Malaysia where we spent our short vacation at our hometowns of Kuala Lumpur and Penang. It was real fun to get together with relatives and old friends, as well as pampering our tummies with our favourite local cuisines. But, sad to say, the quality for some of them had deteriorated and didn’t quite keep up to our expectation. Meanwhile, the food prices were marked higher than what we used to pay previously.
After coming back to Singapore, we stayed home most of the time as the weather has been unbearably hot and humid. To keep our body cool, we drink plenty of fluid everyday. One drink that we got hooked lately is mango lassi. It’s a seriously delicious, inexpensive and healthy pick-me-up which pleases both the eyes and the palate. Best of all, it’s incredibly easy to make even younger kids (with an adult’s supervision) can do it. Just put fresh mangoes, yogurt, milk, ice cubes and a little honey into a blender and blend until smooth. In less than 10 seconds, Ta-Da! A creamy, nourishing and refreshing mango lassi is ready! This superfast and super good drink is a must to try when mango is in season. Now, it’s just the right timing! You can choose any variety you like (ranging from India, Malaysia, Thailand and very soon Pakistan) but make sure pick those that are meaty, sweet, fragrant, fully and less fibrous.
Mango can be eaten unripe or ripen. When ripen, it is naturally sweet. It’s rich in amino acids, vitamin C and E, flavonoids, beta carotene, niacin, calcium, iron, magnesium and potassium. Your child can gain many health benefits by eating mango, such as:
- reduce risk of cancer
- promote good eye sight
- help in digestion
- improve skin complexion
- help in anemia
- boost memory
- good for gaining weight – maybe not for me, hehe!

If you are looking for something cool to beat the heat, this drink is definitely healthier choice than commercial packet drink or soft drink. It’s also a simple and practical way to help your picky eaters enjoy the goodness of mango, milk and yoghurt all in one go.
Father’s Day falls on this coming Sunday. Join me and let’s toss with this mango lassi drink wishing all the wonderful dads “A Happy Father’s Day”.

Notes
- I used Greek style yoghurt which is creamier than normal yogurt.
- You can learn how to cut a mango from this link.
- If your blender is not suitable for crushing ice, then you have to crush them first by putting the ice cubes into a plastic bag and crush roughly with a mortar or rolling pin.
- Choose mango that is fully ripen, sweet, fragrant and less fibrous. I used Thailand honey mangoes.
